10 Things You Didn't Know About Mimi Knoop

After winning the Women’s Soul Bowl contest at the S3 Supergirl Jam, Mimi Knoop is setting the ladies skate circuit on fire with displays of powerful skills, fast skating, and talent that are earning her some tidy prize purses. “Mimi looked like she owned it,” said World Cup of Skateboarding head judge Charlie Wilkins. “Run after run, she skated everything fast and powerfully, including all corners of the bowl while incorporating travelling airs.”

But modest Mimi hasn’t let her success go to her head: “I am honored to win,” she commented on her victory. “A lot of girls were skating well. I wasn’t expecting to take first place, but I just happened to stay on and connect some tricks which worked in my favour.”

We get the low-down on the burgeoning skate sensation with 10 facts you never knew…

1. She’s a military brat from Virginia.

2. She first started skating in Cuba in 4th grade.

3. In high school, friends named her Knoop Dogg: “For some reason it stuck . . . I’m not claiming gangsta, though!”

4. She loves art and graduated from college with a B.F.A.

5. After that, she lived on an eco-camp in the Caribbean and worked as a wine steward.

6. She was about to transfer to London when 9-11 shot down the hospitality and travel industries.

7. Instead, she road-tripped across the country “for lack of anything better to do”.

8. When she started skating seriously in California in 2002, she “didn’t even know there were contests for girls.”

9. Croatia, Australia and Iceland are three cool places skating has taken her.

10. She has a winner’s approach to life: “Do the best you can with what you’re given. If you want something, then go out and get it and get it with class.”
Since she has just won this year’s Pro-Tec Pool Party and Soul Bowl, this approach seems to be working!

CGS Rides High in the LA Times!

Turns out pink really is the new black. Black and white that is. The LA Times reported on Cool Girls Skateboards and the challenges we face convincing skate shops that girls really do like pink! Unfortunately, many store buyers often have the same mindset as Mirko Antich, as reported by the LA Times, "If a girl's a skateboarder, I think she's more boyish and won't like girlish stuff on her board," says Antich, buyer for South Bay Skates and Museum.

Who says girls can't demand both quality and stylish girly gear? Here's to CGS for representing girl skaters and our demands for fierce feminine boards!

Featured Cool Girl Decks' Team Skater, Alize Montes!

At 8 years old Alize Montes is already considered one of the best young girl skaters in the world. Alize started skating when she was just five years old. And she was a snowboarder before that. Alize competed in her first snowboarding contest last month, and she plans on entering more snowboarding events this season. This coming skate season, Alize will be competing in mostly street contest. She finds skating street more challenging then skating bowls.

Alize is in her 3rd year of skating for Cool Girl Decks, and we're very lucky to have her on our team. Her other sponsors are Etnies, Volcom, Von Zipper, Bones, and Destructo Trucks.

Action Sports Alliance

Girlz that truly Rock! They are constantly working to bring women to the forefront of the sport and media surrounding it. OC Skater Featured in New Tony Hawk Game

Orange County native and rad skater, Vanessa Torres, is featured in Tony Hawk’s "Proving Ground". "Proving Ground" is Hawk's latest game, released October 16, 2007.

Street skater, Vanessa Torres, is one of the top skateboarding women in the world. Vanessa is featured in several women's skateboarding videos, including, "AKA: Girl Skater and Getting Nowhere Faster". Vanessa is the third female skateboarder to appear in the Tony Hawk series, following Elissa Steamer and Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins.
